Oftentimes, I have the opportunity to work with people whom I've known for a long time. They are true fans of my work and sometimes just simply waiting for the perfect timing or a milestone occasion to work together to create a special piece. This was that very scenario and I'm so excited to share the wonderful story behind this 12th Anniversary Tie Bar. Read on to see more about how this piece came to life.
A gift for the special man in her life
While I don't create many men's pieces for my collections, I do, however, often get asked to create exclusive commission pieces for men, made especially to fit their exact style. For this unique piece I had the opportunity to work with the wife of someone I've known for years. (Savannah is small and I love when paths cross in various ways!) That said, this dear lady came to me with an interesting idea. She wanted to create a tie bar as a 12th wedding anniversary present for her husband, but she had this jade bead from his late grandmother that she also wanted to incorporate into the piece. Y'all know how much I love adding those special touches to pieces to truly take them over the top! So, that's exactly where we started.
The Ripple inspiration
I’ve created tie bars in the past for my signature Ripple Collection, so we started with that inspiration for the base layer. Then I took the bead and formed it into the perfect cabochon to be set into the tie bar. After creating a custom bezel and soldering it to the tie bar, I executed several rounds of cleanup before preparing to set the stone (aka “the bead”).
Nailed it!
As you can see, this piece came out wonderfully. It's unique and modern, but has that organic edge that gives it a little extra flair. For this Client and her husband, it's the perfect fit! And as one extra little detail, to take the shine down, I added a darkening patina which really helps to enhance the “rippling” detailing and make the patterning truly pop. The patina also enhances the stunning jade bead and brings an overall sense of unity to the piece. Based on the feedback I received from the Client and her husband, I think I nailed it!
