I absolutely love building jewelry collections for repeat clients. When a client comes back, it means that I did something right, and that’s the best feeling. So when this client reached out looking for a custom piece to pair with her Roaring Rapids ring, I was over the moon - or should I say over the river! Even better, this time around she wanted to do one of my favorite things: an heirloom redesign!
Natural Sapphire Sparkle
The client had a lovely heirloom natural sapphire and several 2.4mm diamonds on her grandmother’s ring, but unfortunately she wasn’t wearing the piece. She wanted to reconstruct it into something she could use on a daily basis. Her goal was to create a piece that she could wear along with her Roaring Rapids, but not as a stacking ring.
Canva Cut-and-Paste
For inspiration, she shared three pieces she loved: the Sunshower, Soaring Songbird, and Lilypads By the Pond. (As a side note, it’s always super helpful when you share inspiration pieces from my own work.) She especially loved the bezel on the Sunshower and the asymmetrical band on the Soaring Songbird.
On a whim, I decided to go into Canva and simply chop up the Soaring Songbird band and pop the bezel from the Sunshower into it. Voila! Just like that, my client’s dream ring appeared! I had to make a few small alterations to accommodate the larger size of her heirloom diamonds, but as an initial sketch and mock-up goes, it was pretty spot-on. So cool!
Crafting the Soaring Sunbeam
To craft this ring, I first built the model in silver. Then, I had it cast in 14K yellow gold to match her Roaring Rapids. (Another cool fact: hers was the first of those I ever made!) I set all the stones very low, so the ring is super comfortable and perfect for an active lifestyle. The low-to-high sweep of the band perfectly balances her original ring as well, so it all comes together perfectly.
