Triplet Trio

Kristen Baird

If you've been around here for a while, by now you guys know I love creating special pieces for Mamas and Mamas-to-be. This piece was such a fun and unique challenge starting with the fact that it is for a mama to triplets (a boy and two girls)! We wanted to create something special...something to be worn daily that could eventually be split into parts and gifted to each child. My client recalled receiving a piece from her mother and remembering her mom wearing it for years and years before it was gifted. She wanted to create a similar scenario for her kids. What a great idea!! Read on to see how this Triplet Trio made its big entrance.

Triplet Trio - Materials and Design by Kristen Baird

The triple stack

Y'all know I love recycling materials. This mama came to me with a pile of jewelry she no longer wore, but wanted to see it reinterpreted into something she could wear daily. We went through a round of designs and came up with this very clean and elegant triple stack using sterling silver as the base (recycling her silver) and incorporating accents of 18 karat yellow gold to symbolize each of her children. We went with additional symbolism in the form of dots for the boy’s ring and little cubes for the girls’ rings. Then we played around with the birth order and incorporated laser engraving on the inside. These pieces, while clean and simple, are filled with precise and intricate detail!

Triplet Trio - Recycling Metals by Kristen Baird

Recycling her silver

I started by melting down metals to create the silver bands. After rounds and rounds of rolling, I was able to get enough silver in the right format to create three bands in the exact size that we needed. It's fun to see materials transformed right in front of your eyes by working with them and working with them and working with them some more.

The tiny details

Then I removed the 18 karat gold that we were recycling from the original beads that were no longer worn. I melted it into little teeny cubes and spheres and started soldering those pieces to the bands in a particular order.

The soldering process

As you can see, the soldering process is quite raw and rough. But that's all I need! From there I'm able to start refining, smoothing and cleaning until the pieces come to life. You can see from the above image the birth order and gender order coming together quite nicely for this mama.

The Triplet Trio Stack

Aren't these just the coolest? This triple stack fits together in perfect harmony. Not only does each child have their own “gender shape” representing them, but the individual band also has their birth order highlighted in 18 karat yellow gold. (Top Band: firstborn girl “the gold square”, second-born boy, third-born girl. Middle Band: firstborn girl, second-born boy “the gold dot”, third-born girl. You get the drift!). This mama was so happy with her Triplet Trio stack and how versatile and everyday-wearable it is. See what she says below...

I'm obsessed with my rings! I'm wearing them. Thank you so so so so much! I love them and I love the little story cards that you included. That's so special! They are perfect and they are even more beautiful than I could have ever imagined in my mind. I can't thank you enough. Thank you so much for being so wonderful! -CD
