Destination Jewelry Design

Kristen Baird

Over the past few years, there’s been an uptick in a trend I love: clients traveling from out of state for jewelry design sessions with me. It’s always a huge honor when someone travels to Savannah to meet with little ‘ol me, and I get so much joy out of these encounters. It’s truly magical to be a part of a couple’s story and to see their eyes light up when we finally nail their dream piece.

There are so many incredible benefits to working in person on custom jewelry designs, and the results have been amazing. Here are a few of my recent favorites!

Marquise Sunrise Engagement Ring

This lovely young couple came down to my studio from Asheville to design a custom engagement ring that has a little bit of everything. The sleek and modern design featured a specially-sourced lab-grown marquise diamond, which became the star of the piece. I built the sophisticated ring in CAD to accommodate an extra-strong prong setting for the bride’s active lifestyle. Then, I had the piece cast in platinum, leaning into all my modern techniques.

Phase two of this project also touches on the traditional and sentimental. We’re creating a wedding band out of heirloom diamonds from the bride’s mother! You can check out the full story of the Marquise Sunrise Engagement Ring on my Commission Blog.

Milky Emerald Masterpiece

Another couple initially saw my work at Gallery 209 while they were in town visiting family. They later returned to design their completely unique engagement ring. We met up at one of my favorite spots in Habersham Village, Coffee Deli, to chat about jewelry. It’s so much fun to look back on my notes from that first meeting and compare them to the final creation! From the beginning, they wanted something secure and comfortable that could be worn every day.

The final design was a combination of elements from several existing KBJ pieces. The band was inspired by my Tsavorite Treasure commission, but we also sourced a very special natural milky emerald that was similar in color and texture to one belonging to my client’s late grandmother. Tracking down a stone that specific can take some work, but we eventually found the perfect piece and shipped it in from India. The result was a clean, yellow-gold band with a bezel specially built for our unique emerald. We also opted for a coordinating Dandelion Meadow band using heirloom diamonds. Perfection!

Beneath the Swiss Blue Stars

This couple found my work online and traveled to Savannah from Arizona specifically to meet with me. What an honor! I loved that they turned their destination jewelry design experience into a lovely weekend getaway in Savannah. I met with them at their Bed and Breakfast downtown and was immediately impressed with how much research they had already done.

They listed several pieces they loved online and I was able to show them those pieces in person. Ultimately, we decided on the Beneath the Stars ring with a custom upgraded stone and setting. Initially, the couple opted for yellow gold, but on the plane ride home, the bride changed her mind to a Platinum band with a Swiss Blue Topaz stone. This is proof that we never stop iterating and improving on a design until we get it right.

And how adorable are they??

Romantic Rose Ring

This couple visited from Tennessee to design a ring for their 16th wedding anniversary. The two-toned platinum and rose gold bridal set was a completely custom build from the ground up. I loved helping this bride upgrade her beautiful but traditional wedding ring into something that truly expressed her personality. We also created a coordinating men’s wedding band that was a variation on the Ocean Ring.

The best part was what the client had to say afterward:

“It has been such a pleasure working with you and you will always come highly recommended in my book. You were so pleasant and fun to work with. And I really cannot thank you enough for giving me something I can always treasure that is just mine and not something a million people also have. So special. AND BEAUTIFUL AS IT GETS!!!! I am just over the moon today. Thank you so, so very much for a job well done!!!! “

There are a million great reasons to visit Savannah, but a Destination Jewelry Design session makes it a million and one. Reach out if you’d like to create something beautiful together. I can’t wait to meet you!
