Guest Blog: Paprika Southern

Kristen Baird

As you folks probably already know, I LOVE working with and supporting small businesses that are hustling and doing amazing things. The ladies at Paprika Southern are just that! We've known each other for several years and it's been a delight to see them transform their vision from an online publication to a beautiful in print magazine. I asked Bevin, co-founder of the brand, to make a guest appearance here to talk about their most recent issue that just launched this weekend. They happened to use my jewelry in their winter inspired photoshoot so take a look below to see behind the scenes. You don't want to miss it!

Thank you so much to Kristen Baird Jewelry for hosting us on their blog today! We always love working with Kristen and jumped at the chance to collaborate on this blog post.

If you’re not already familiar with Paprika Southern, we’re a small-batch publication focused on inspiring creative and intentional living. We do that by sharing the stories of creative entrepreneurs and artists, as well as through styled fashion and lifestyle shoots. For our winter fashion shoot, we were inspired by the beautiful driftwood landscape on Jekyll Island in Georgia, as well as the idea of textured winter whites. We asked Atlanta stylist Carol Jensky to come on board to style the shoot, and she created dreamy winter looks that mixed chunky knits with lighter weight fabrics. We immediately knew that the cool, monochromatic color palette Carol had created would be perfectly complemented by Kristen’s nature-inspired jewelry designs.

We thought it would be fun to take you behind the scenes of the shoot today! A lot goes into planning a styled shoot, from concept, building a team (stylist, hair and makeup, model, etc.), to choosing a location, to pulling clothing and accessories, and more.

One challenge when shooting outdoors is always weather. We envisioned an overcast day that would feel wintry, even though we had to shoot in October (in southeast Georgia, which can be still very hot!) It turned out to be partly cloudy, partly sunny, and very windy day. Although the wind worked in our favor for the wintry vibes, the quickly changing light proved a big challenge.

One of our favorite things about shooting at the driftwood beach on Jekyll was that it looked like it could be a location other than Georgia. The way Siobhan Egan, our co-editor and photographer, framed shots, made the location look like it could be the Northeast or even Scotland. The rocky beach, unusual in the Southeast, gave the shoot a decidedly different feel than a typical Georgia beach.

For hair and makeup, the Dollface by Jules team created a natural winter look that was inspired by the flush of a winter chill on the skin, incorporating rosey cheeks and lips.
