How many times have you carefully packed your jewelry into one of those cute little travel jewelry boxes, only to find it a tangled mess when you arrive? If the answer is “always,” don’t worry. I’m sharing my tried-and-true technique for safely transporting jewelry, so you can pack like a designer for your next adventure.
If Travelling with Just a Few Pieces, Use the Kristen Baird® Specialty Packaging
Did you know that all of my specialty packaging is perfect for jewelry storage? Don’t throw it away! Specifically, the Kristen Baird® Suede Snap Pouch is ideal for travel. It has two pockets, so I like to keep necklaces in the front and earrings in the back.
You can put 2-3 necklaces on one of the original necklace cards they come on. (More than that will lead to tangles.) Then put the card with the necklaces into the original plastic bag and place that in the pouch. Put your earrings on their original cards, then place the cards in their respective plastic bags in the back of the pouch. Finally, place the entire Suede Pouch into the original Kristen Baird® box to protect it. Voila!
Rings should be kept in their original ring boxes, and my Suede Drawstring Bag is perfect for cuffs. It’s as simple as that.
If Travelling with a Lot of Pieces, Use the “Baseball Card Method”
When I travel for shows, I bring a lot of jewelry. (And I mean a lot.) In this case, it isn’t practical to keep everything in the original packaging. Instead, I have long black boxes with sleeves inside. I put each piece on its own card in its own plastic bag and line them up, so people can flip through them like baseball cards. It’s so much fun!
But you don’t need my fancy jewelry display boxes to use the “Baseball Card” method. A simple and perfectly sized corrugated box will do just fine. I’m partial to the ones with tabs that fold in. They just feel really secure. Simply put each piece on its original card and in its original bag. Each of my pieces also comes with an anti-tarnish tab, so keep that in the bag along with the tarnish cloth. The cloth is useful for extra cushioning and a quick polish in the hotel room. Rings can be kept in their boxes and stacked inside the larger box as well.
A nice side benefit of this method is that it’s very nondescript. No one can guess that your simple white box is full of jewelry. Which brings me to my final set of tips…
Keep Your Jewelry Secure
Jewelry security is incredibly important during travel. If flying, I never keep jewelry in a checked bag. Put it in your carry-on. (If you’re worried about people seeing it, the white box is a great idea.)
It goes without saying that you won’t be wearing your jewelry on the beach, so if you’re staying in a hotel, always keep your jewelry in the safe. Please don’t place your ring on a bedside table or bathroom sink. Things have a sneaky way of getting lost, forgotten, or (God forbid) dropped down the drain. Otherwise, keep your jewelry on your neck, wrists, and fingers!
